CBD while Pregnant or Nursing

Is CBD safe while Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

When it comes to life for us moms there are always a ton of questions, starting during pregnancy and continuing long after that.

What are natural alternatives to prescription medications that may have dangerous side effects? What is safe? What isn’t? How much of what you take will affect your baby?

We get asked these questions on a daily basis, mainly is CBD safe for pregnant or nursing moms?

When it comes to THC, research suggest avoiding it during pregnancy while nursing. However, when it comes to pure CBD there has just not been enough research done to determine whether it is safe or not to take. The truth is, many women who have chosen CBD during their pregnancy and breastfeeding journey have reported natural relief to common postpartum symptoms.

Cannabinoids in Breastmilk

Breastmilk is full of cannabinoids that are incredibly important to human development. In a study published in 2004 in the European Journal of Pharmacology, it states that all humans are born with a cannabinoid receptors, which suggest that endocannabinoids play a vital role in pre and postnatal development. The endocannabinoid system consists of a series of receptors specifically to accept cannabinoids.

The ECS seems to play a role in stimulating the appetite when the newborn is first learning to feed. Newborns who are breastfed naturally receive cannabinoids that trigger hunger and promote growth and development.

Cannabinoids in breastmilk do not only have food related functions. The ECS has also been shown to help protect neurons in the post natal development of the brain. Essentially, this means the human body produces, and requires, endocannabinoids to support and maintain human health.

Potential Uses

There are many potentials uses for a new mom. You are entering a new phase of life, which can be incredibly stressful, you are throwing your normal daily routine on its head. Sleep patterns change, anxiety and worry increases, the “baby blues” can creep in, or even the postpartum depression.  Roughly one in ten women experience some degree of depression. These are all issues that CBD potentially can help with.

Bottom line

We always recommend speaking with your physician prior to taking any new medication, not just CBD. In the end, the choice is between you and your doctor. There have been many women who have ultimately decided that CBD is the right choice for them over certain prescription medications.

While we can’t say definitively that CBD is safe while pregnant or breastfeeding, we do know that CBD is regularly prescribed for children battling seizures as a safe, non-intoxicating and natural solution.
